What is the KOKOERP Scam Network?

Fellow scamfighter Suzie recently got in touch to tell me about a possible network of fake ecommerce stores she had come across. The common thread she pointed out was that all the websites use email IDs originating from the domain kokoerp.com

This case sounded similar to other scam networks I have uncovered recently, such as the ManyHNice network and the ‘Uniqueness’ network covered here on my blog as well as on Scamadviser. Indeed, it turned out that there are at least 150 websites in the kokoerp.com network scamming online shoppers. Ironically, kokoerp.com itself is now down, but most of the other websites found are alive and kicking.

There are four things common between these websites – the email domain @kokoerp.com, the phone number 1-877-2534927, IP addresses of websites and lots of complaints.

There are numerous complaints against these websites such as orders not being shipped and random items being delivered. The trick that the scammers play is that they send out fake tracking numbers of orders which have been delivered even before the customer’s order was placed. This fools PayPal into siding with the scammers and the money is never refunded.

Uncovering the Scam

These websites mostly look similar and are shoddily designed. They use the same few templates which gives them an identifiable look when you’ve seen enough of them. Many of the websites even look rushed and incomplete, as they still have the original placeholder text.

These websites claim to sell everything from clothes to toys to appliances. The images and content are all stolen from websites which actually sell these products. The websites are mainly geared towards women and offer goods at low prices, which is what makes these scams successful. From what I have observed, they target women through Facebook ads to drive traffic to the fake stores.

The tip-off that Suzie gave me was that there are several websites reported as scams which are using email IDs from the domain @kokoerp.com. I set out to discover the size of the network and found the following:

152 websites
147 email IDs
1 phone number
7 IP addresses

The lists of websites and email IDs are given at the end of the article.

Even though there are such a large number of email IDs, they seem to be fake. The IDs look like either don’t exist or are on a catch-all server. The email IDs are a mix of Chinese names, Western names and gibberish.

125 of these websites originate from the same IP address which is 23.227.38.32. A majority of the websites are registered in Canada and USA. However, kokoerp.com itself is registered in China and hosted separately on the IP address 116.6.104.4. These facts confirm that it is a Chinese network set up to scam customers.

I am sure that the network is even larger because these are just the websites which I was able to find through a single Google search. Even if I run multiple searches using different terms and variation, I might not be able to uncover all of them as Google might not index all the stores. Plus, these scammers seem to open new fake stores literally every day.

Pretty much all the websites use the phone number 1-877-253-4927. It shows up as Betterchops on TrueCaller. I was not even able to detect any website called Betterchops from my research, which clearly shows that the network is much larger.

The next time you’re shopping online, make sure to check the Contact Us page to see if you can spot the phone number 1-877-253-4927 or an @kokoerp.com email address. If you do, you can be sure that it is a scam.

Apart from the contact details, you should also watch out for these signs:

Weird website names which barely resemble English and have random alphabets in between
Badly-written content or no content. The title bar text is the biggest giveaway
The store is selling products that are out of stock everywhere else
The website uses one of the two or three templates which are being used by websites in the below list

How to Get Your Money Back from a Scam

Remember: If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

If you have been the victim of an ecommerce scam, you can take the following steps:

Lodge a complaint at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal
File a complaint with the payment portal and ask whether the payment can be reversed.
File a complaint with the Consumer Complaints Forum
Leave a negative review on review portals such as Scamadviser, TrustPilot, OnlineThreatAlerts and SiteJabber
Report the website to Google using the Suspicious Site Reporter extension for Chrome
Give a low rating to the website on Web of Trust. You can also install their extension for the same.
