Why is Wisconsin-store Fake?

Wisconsin-store is a website that claims to be selling realistic plush animals at low prices. The images on the website have been stolen from genuine artists such as KittenBlackUA (Elena Fedoryak) on Etsy. While the originals cost thousands of dollars, Wisconsin-store is offering the same for around $50, making it obvious that it is a scam. Customers who order from Wisconsin-store can expect to receive pitiable knock-offs.

The website’s logo nonsensically reads ‘Ohio-Store’ even though the site’s URL is ‘Wisconsin-store’.

A domain name lookup of the website shows that wisconsin-store.com was registered on 19th August 2022. Additionally, the domain name has been registered from China and the registrant’s name and contact details are not provided. Therefore, it is a new website being run anonymously from a high-risk country.

Firstly, the name of a completely different website called nwfang is given which may be a related scam. The page also contains the email ID ‘mahaoxuan2023@126.com’ which is a free ID and paints Wisconsin-store as not being a professional operation.

Upon analyzing the content, I found that the same text is used on at least 53 other websites, all of which are likely to be scams. Qti.Ai’s Scami uncovered 96 additional sites using this text too, adding up to a total of 149 websites related to Wisconsin-store which are likely to be scams. Some of these sites such as Feecoz and Abdserry are confirmed scams. The full list of sites is given at the end of the article.

While testing the checkout process, I found that PayPal account being used by Wisconsin-store is named ‘山西居东居电子商务有限公司’ which translates to ‘Shanxi Judongju Electronic Commerce Co., Ltd.’. This company name is not mentioned anywhere on the website and this once again suggests that Wisconsin-store may be among a plethora of fake online stores created by Chinese cybercrime networks.

Even though there are no social media pages listed on Wisconsin-store’s website, I found that a Facebook page for it exists which is being used for advertising on Facebook and Instagram. The Facebook page contains a random Chinese address which is not present anywhere on the website.

Even though there are multiple clear indications that Wisconsin-store is a Chinese operation, the T&C page falsely claims that the website follows the laws of Cyprus. There is absolutely no proof of this being true.

The company details of ‘Hong Kong Yimai E-commerce Limited’ have been provided but there is no way to verify if such a company exists as only the company name and address are given. In any case, it is clearly not a business operating from Cyprus.

It seems quite obvious that Wisconsin-store and the 150 similar sites may all be scams operated by Chinese cybercrime networks. Wisconsin-store is a new site created anonymously from China in August 2022. However, the website owners have obscured the site’s Chinese origin and are lying that it is a business based Cyprus.

All the content on the website is copied. The images have been stolen from genuine creators on sites such as Etsy. The prices on the website are too good to be true, which is often the most obvious indication of a scam. With help from Qti.ai‘s Scami, I found that there are 149 websites using the same content as Wisconsin-store and are likely to be operated by the same fraudsters.

Wisconsin-store has a Facebook page which is being used for advertising on Facebook and Instagram. All the contact details appear to be fake and there does not seem to be any way to get support after making a purchase. No customer reviews could be found online.

It is advisable to avoid shopping on Wisconsin-store or any of the 150 similar websites as they do not seem to be genuine businesses.

If you think that you have been scammed by any of these sites, you can contact your bank or PayPal for a full refund. Don’t accept a partial refund citing that the product is not what you ordered and refuse to ship the items back to China as the merchant claims to be located in Cyprus.
