What is the Umall Technology S.A.R.L Scam Network?
While researching shopping scams, I have come across numerous ‘scam networks’ of fake websites. Essentially, a ‘scam network’ is a collection of independent websites created by a single entity for the explicit purpose of scamming customers. Scam networks can operate many different kinds of scams – shopping scams, investment scams, phishing and more.
All the shopping scam networks I have come across appear to originate from China and most of them operate under the names of various shell companies registered in countries such as Hong Kong, Cyprus, Germany, the UK and Ireland. One such shell company seems to be Umall Technology S.A.R.L which is registered in France and has relations to the Uniqueness Scam Network of fake online stores operated from China.
The easiest way to identify a website operating under the name of Umall Technology S.A.R.L is to check whether the About Us, Contact Us, Terms & Conditions or Privacy Policy page have the below company information:
- Company Name: UMALL TECHNOLOGY S.A.R.L
Company Address: 15 RUE DES HALLES, PARIS, FRANCE.
The above information is usually formatted as an image to hide the company name from search engines. If you see Umall Technology S.A.R.L mentioned on the website or on your invoice/statement, there is a high likelihood that you may have fallen for a scam.
The below company details were also found on sites on which the details of Umall Technology S.A.R.L were present:
- Company name: SHARLOMAY LTD
Company address: Agion Theodoron 6 Agios Athanasios, 4102, Limassol, Cyprus - JAMYA LIMITED
One Victoria Square, Birmingham, Victoria Square, Birmingham, England, B1 1BD
Upon analyzing the content, I found that there are hundreds of similar websites using the same content, all which are presumably scams operating under the name of Umall Technology S.A.R.L and related entities in the Uniqueness Scam Network. The list of sites is given at the end of the article.
There are certainly thousands of more hidden sites similar to these. In the below screenshots, you can see websites claiming to be operated by Umall Technology S.A.R.L using the same text as sites in the Uniqueness Scam Network.
Looking up the company information in the French business register revealed that Umall Technology S.A.R.L was registered in May 2022 under the name of a Chinese national named Yu Baoying. Therefore, it is likely that it is a shell incorporation being (mis)used by Chinese organized cybercriminals to launder the proceeds of scams to China.
I also found that Umall Technology S.A.R.L has an active lawsuit filed against it in May 2023 by Whirlpool Corporation for patent infringement.
Scam sites claiming to be operated by Umall Technology S.A.R.L’s are promoted mainly through Facebook ads. Each website usually has multiple Facebook pages created for it, including pages that been hacked into and taken over. They are all used for running advertisements on Meta’s platforms Facebook and Instagram. The reason for creating multiple pages is to have backups in case a page gets deleted so that ads can continuously keep running.
Shockingly, Meta is unintentionally allowing its users to be defrauded and is indirectly profiting from shopping scams. Ads don’t always get taken down even after being reported and the reporting system itself is a joke because the scammers are able to create new pages with ease to run more ads. A more proactive approach needs to be taken by Facebook because whatever systems they have in place are clearly not enough to protect their users from dangerous websites operating under the names of Umall Technology S.A.R.L. and other entities in the Uniqueness Scam Network.
There are numerous negative reviews about the websites operating under the name of Umall Technology S.A.R.L and the company itself on sites such as Scamdoc, Scamwatcher, Signal-arnaques, Trustpilot and more. Common customer complaints include false advertising, products being shipped from China, late or no delivery, poor customer service and refusal to provide refunds.
If you think that you have been scammed by a site supposedly operated by Umall Technology S.A.R.L, you can contact PayPal or your bank for a full refund. Don’t accept a partial refund citing that the product is not what you ordered and refuse to ship the items back to China as the merchant claims to be located in France.
Update
I received the below Facebook message from someone named 汤虹雨 claiming to be a representative of UseePay/Umall Technology S.A.R.L, in response to my article on Hyperhesterstore:
Dear James Greening,
We have noticed your recent post on Facebook regarding Umall company (https://fakewebsitebuster.com/hyperhesterstore-com-umall-technology-sarl/), and we are deeply concerned. However, we feel the need to clarify some facts and express our stance.
Umall is a subsidiary of a global payment company, specializing in providing payment gateway services for merchants in Europe. As such, we have numerous sub-merchants under our umbrella to ensure diversified services for different clients. However, we assure you that we are dedicated to upholding consumer rights. We mandate all sub-merchants to provide full refunds to address any consumer concerns.
We value and appreciate consumer feedback, and we remain committed to improving our service standards to ensure the best shopping experience for our clients. Therefore, we kindly request the removal of the accusatory post about Umall company across all platforms. This has significantly impacted our business, and we thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Sincerely,
Umall Company Representative
