Why is Idearock Fake?

Idearock (idearock.co.uk) is a website that claims to be selling an assortment of mass-produced Chinese goods at discounts. The prices of the items seem to be rather inflated as the same can be bought for lower prices on AliExpress, even after including the cost of shipping. The nonsensical pricing makes it immediately apparent that everything isn’t right with Idearock.

A domain name lookup of the website shows that it was registered on 20th January 2021. The registrant’s details such as name, location and contact information have not been made public. However, there are clear indications that Idearock is operated from China, which I will go into later in the article. Therefore, it is a relatively new website operated anonymously from a high-risk country.

The About Us page contains the following text:

This is the same text found on websites in the Uniqueness Scam Network, a large network of scam sites run by organized cybercriminals from China which I have written about several times in the past. I discovered at least 426 websites using the same content as Idearock. Qti.Ai’s Scami uncovered 750 additional sites using this text too, adding up to a total of 1,177 websites which are likely to be scams. The full list of sites is given at the end of the article.

On the Terms & Conditions page, it is stated that Idearock operates as per UK laws. However, this is contradicted on the same page as the company details show that the site is run by a Chinese company.

The following company details are provided. Suspiciously, the data has been formatted as an image, presumably to hide it from search engines as the same information is present on hundreds of websites:

When I checked the company registration details, I found that Saker Tech Limited was registered in Hong Kong in June 2019. Therefore, Idearock is clearly a Chinese operation and not a UK-based business. I have come across Saker Tech previously while researching scams such as Shinerme and Suneveryday.

While testing the checkout process, I found that the PayPal account associated with the website has the name Sunsmile Ltd. This is concerning as there is no mention of this company anywhere on Idearock’s website.

When I further researched Sunsmile Ltd., I found that it was a company registered in the UK by a Chinese national which was dissolved in March 2020, almost a year before Idearock’s website was created. This suggests that Sunsmile Ltd. may have been a shell company which was used to launder the proceeds of scams to China.

Additionally, I also found that there are several complaints about Sunsmile Ltd. by customers who got scammed after purchasing from the myriad of websites operated by this company. Nicelocal.co.uk alone has 50 reviews with an overall rating of 1.6/5 for Sunsmile Ltd. Complaints include orders never being delivered and false advertising, both of which are the modus operandi of the Uniqueness Scam Network.

Even though no social media pages are linked on Idearock’s website, I found that at least three advertising accounts were created for it on Facebook. One of these pages is still active and is running almost 800 ads on Facebook and Instagram. The strangest thing, however, is that Facebook claims that the page does not exist!

The Contact Us page of the website contains no information except for the email ID ‘customer@idearock.co.uk. Therefore, Idearock can only be contacted by email.

There are quite a few reviews available for Idearock on Trustpilot. The site has an extremely poor rating of 1.2/5 based on 133 reviews. Common complaints include false advertising, late or no delivery, poor customer service and refusal to provide refunds. The reviews also indicate a connection between the Idearock and the Labubu Scam Network.

There is a tremendously high likelihood that Idearock and the 1,176 similar sites may all be scams operated by the Uniqueness Scam Network from China, hiding behind companies such as Saker Tech Limited registered in Hong Kong and the now-defunct Sunsmile Ltd. registered in the UK.

Idearock is a new site created anonymously from China in March 2021. I found that there are 1,176 websites that have the same content as Idearock and are likely to be operated by the same owners.

While the website tries to give a false impression that Idearock is a UK-based operation, the site only contains information about Saker Tech Limited registered in Hong Kong. Further, the PayPal account associated with the website is named Sunsmile Ltd., which was a company registered in the UK that dissolved in 2020. There are a number of complaints against this company for scamming customers. This suggests that the owners of Idearock may be using a complex network of PayPal accounts to launder money to China.

Idearock has at least three Facebook pages out of which one is active. The page is running almost 800 ads but Facebook has made the information about the page owners inaccessible.

It is advisable to avoid shopping on Idearock or any of the 1,176 similar websites as the prices are highly inflated. Going by the track record of sites associated with Idearock, customers are likely to receive low-quality goods or nothing at all.

If you think that any of these sites has scammed you, you can contact PayPal or your bank for a full refund. Don’t accept a partial refund citing that the product is not what you ordered and refuse to ship the items back to China as the merchant claims to be located in the UK.
