What is the Waldorf Dolls Scam?

Waldorf dolls are dolls that are traditionally made using natural materials like wool and cotton. Each doll is typically handmade by skilled artists. Many Waldorf doll-makers sell their creations through platforms such as Etsy and Facebook.

Unfortunately, several Chinese scammers are damaging the reputation of genuine Waldorf doll-makers due to their bad business practices. A couple of weeks back, an artist who creates hand-made Waldorf-like dolls got in touch with me on my Facebook page concerning images from her Facebook page being stolen by Chinese scammers. The dolls created by her are one-of-a-kind and not mass-produced. However, there are several websites using images stolen from her, as well as several other Waldorf doll makers, claiming to sell the same items at low prices.

These websites take money for orders and do not delivery any dolls at all, or send low-quality dolls that bear no resemblance to real Waldorf dolls. More recently, customers have been receiving only doll clothes.

Angry customers then leave bad reviews on the Facebook pages or online stores of the genuine doll makers, believing them to be scammers. Attempts to get the scammers’ websites taken down have had little effect, as they simply create new websites to continue the scam.

If you see Waldorf dolls being sold on unknown websites, there is a possibility that they are selling low-quality dolls. Always contact the doll-maker directly so you can be sure that you’re buying genuine Waldorf dolls. If you are not able to get in touch with the person who is making these dolls, be wary as it may be a scam.

There is also some evidence that this scam may be run by the Kokoerp scam network, as some websites selling fake Waldorf dolls contain the phone number belonging to those scammers.

A big thanks to Ildiko Duretz for informing me about this scam. She is a doll-maker herself who creates Waldorf-inspired dolls and is one of the many artists whose business has been affected by these scammers. Visit her website Ildila to check if there is a doll available for purchase and subscribe for updates.

Given below is a list of scam websites using stolen images from a number of different Waldorf doll-makers, compiled by Ildiko. Upon checking the list, it was found that 97 out of 100 websites checked have shared IP addresses. This means that these websites are definitely part of an organized scam network.
