Why is Ripple.com.lc Fake?

Ripple.com.lc is a website that claims to be operated by the technology company Ripple Labs. Ripple Labs is based in California, USA and develops the Ripple payment protocol and exchange network. However, the official website of Ripple Labs is ripple.com and not ripple.com.lc. The .lc extension is intended to be used by businesses in Saint Lucia.

Domain name lookups of both websites clearly show that ripple.com.lc is a new website created in January 2022 while ripple.com is a much older site that is being operated by Ripple Labs since 2013. Even though ripple.com.lc uses the domain extension of Saint Lucia, the domain name itself has apparently been registered in Bulgaria.

These discrepancies indicate that ripple.com.lc is a fake website created by scammers to hack into crypto wallets. I found multiple reports on Twitter where users have said that they received emails perpetrating to be from Ripple Labs leading to this fake site. One user has stated that the registration form required their passphrase. Therefore, ripple.com.lc is a phishing website.

ripple.com.lc is a one-to-one copy of the original Ripple site, however, there are some obvious signs that it was created by scammers. For one, the fake site has a fake registration form that is impossible to fill because the captcha does not work.

A further lack of attention to detail is observed on the fake site as the documentation such as Terms of Service and Privacy Policy contain the URL of the original site ripple.com and not ripple.com.lc which is the fake site’s URL.

Conclusion

It is completely obvious that Ripple.com.lc is a fake website designed explicitly to steal money. The website has been anonymously operating since Jan 2022 and the domain name was apparently registered in Bulgaria. All the signs suggest that Ripple.com.lc is a clone site created to scam people out of their money.

Many Twitter users have reported that they received mails perpetrating to be from Ripple Labs. However, the links in their emails lead to the fake website ripple.com.lc which has no relation to the actual site located at ripple.com. Trying to register on a fake site will cause your crypto wallet to be hacked.
