Why is Hercupp Fake?

Hercupp is a website that claims to be selling a random assortment of Chinese goods at low prices. The images on the website have been stolen from genuine artists such as WallKnot on Etsy. The prices seem to be random too as the same items can be found on AliExpress for a fraction of the cost.

It can also be seen that Hercupp gives customers the option of having their orders shipped from China and USA. This is important to note because there are signs that Hercupp may be a Chinese website hiding behind a shell company registered in Ireland.

A domain name lookup of the website shows that hercupp.com was registered on 11th April 2022 from China. The registrant’s name and contact details are not provided. Therefore, it is a new website being run anonymously from a high-risk country.

The About Us page contains the following text:

At hercupp, we believe that the ecommerce has brought the world closer. Ecommerce is a boon as we come to know the happenings around the world.

Upon analyzing the content, I found that the same text is used on at least 379 other websites, all of which are likely to be scams. Qti.Ai’s Scami uncovered 472 additional sites using this text too, adding up to a total of 851 websites related to Hercupp which are likely to be scams.

While testing the checkout process, I found that Hercupp has limited the maximum number of items per purchase to 1. A shipping charge of $999,999 is automatically applied when more than one item is added to the cart. A new and unknown website actively discouraging customers from buying more strikes me as enormously strange. It is likely to be a tactic to avoid fraud detection by credit card companies.

Even though Hercupp claims to accept PayPal, this is not true as only credit cards are accepted during checkout. This shows that the website is not run by professionals.

Despite multiple indications that Hercupp is a Chinese operation, the T&C page states that the site operates as per the laws of Ireland. The below company details have been provided on the page.

Notably, the information has been formatted as an image, probably to avoid detection from search engines as this company is associated with thousands of dubious websites. I found that Fadel-Beatty Limited is a real company registered in December 2021 in Ireland. However, I previously discovered that it is connected to Meledo Company Limited which seems to be a shell company registered in the UK from China. Therefore, it is likely that Fadel-Beatty might also be a shell company created by the same Chinese owners.

Even though there are no social media pages listed on Hercupp’s website, I found that four Facebook pages for it exist, three of which which are being used for advertising on Facebook and Instagram. One of the Facebook pages contains a random Chinese address which is not present anywhere on the website. The page manager locations also show that they are likely to be operated from China using a VPN to show fake locations.

The Contact Us page of the website only contains the email ID ‘hercupp@gmail.com‘. This is a free Gmail ID and not a professional one, hinting that customers may not get a response if they try contacting Hercupp.

Conclusion

It seems evident that Hercupp and the 851 similar sites may all be scams operated by Chinese cybercrime networks. Hercupp is a new site created anonymously from China in April 2022. However, the website owners have obscured the site’s Chinese origin and are claiming that it is managed by a business called Fadel-Beatty Limited registered in Ireland. Fadel-Beatty Ltd. has been found to be connected to Meledo Company Limited, which is a suspected shell company registered in the UK from China.

All the content on the website is copied. The images have been stolen from genuine creators on sites such as Etsy and the prices on the website are randomly inflated. With help from Qti.ai‘s Scami, I found that there are 851 websites using the same content as Hercupp and are likely to be operated by the same fraudsters.

Hercupp has four separate Facebook pages, one of which seems to be a hacked page. Shockingly, three of these are being used for advertising on Facebook and Instagram. Only a Gmail ID is provided for customer support and there does not seem to be any real way to get support after making a purchase. No customer reviews could be found online.

It is advisable to avoid shopping on Hercupp or any of the 851 similar websites as they do not seem to be genuine businesses.

If you think that you have been scammed by any of these sites, you can contact your bank for a full refund. Don’t accept a partial refund citing that the product is not what you ordered and refuse to ship the items back to China as the merchant claims to be located in Ireland.
