Why is Bbviplink Fake?

Bbviplink is a website that appears to be trying to impersonate the New World supermarket chain in New Zealand. The website appears to be a scam right from the outset as the website quality is extremely poor, the selection of items is random and the prices are too good to be true.

A domain name lookup of the website shows that it was registered on 19th July 2022. The registrant’s details such as name and contact information have not been provided, and the location is mentioned as North Carolina, USA. However, the site actually seems to be operated from China, the reasons for which I will explain later in the article. Therefore, it is a new website that is being operated anonymously from a high-risk country.

The About Us page of Bbviplink contains the following text:

Firstly, the page mentions that Bbviplink is an ‘online fashion retailer’ which is utter nonsense as the website does not sell any clothing. The content has been copied and I found that the same image and text are being used on at least 67 other websites, all of which may be scams. Qti.ai’s Scami found an additional 9 sites, bringing the total number of websites related to Bbviplink to 76. The full list of sites is given at the end of the article.

The overall website quality of Bbviplink is frankly pathetic as there are numerous signs that the website has not been created by e-commerce professionals. The website is littered with spelling and grammar errors, and there are multiple links that lead to empty pages.

What I found most egregious is that Bbviplink does not even have a Terms & Conditions page. Click on the ‘Terms of Service’ link in the website’s footer leads to a message in Chinese stating “Data does not exist”. Any real company would have a working Terms page and the Chinese text makes it evident that Bbviplink is a fake site lazily created by Chinese scammers.

Another indication of Bbviplink not being a legitimate business can be seen on the Returns Policy page, where it is mentioned in one instance that the website has a 30-day return policy instead of a 60-day one. A genuine company would not make such a blatant mistake.

While testing the checkout process, I found that the shopping cart is designed such that users cannot spend more than $100 at a time. As soon as more than one item is added to the cart on Bbviplink, a $99,999 shipping charge is automatically added to stop the customer from buying multiple items. I have observed this trick being used by scammers earlier too and my guess is that it is done to avoid fraud detection by PayPal by keeping the transaction value below $100.

Bbviplink has social media icons on its website but they are fake as they lead nowhere. I couldn’t find any social media pages on my own.

There is no company information given anywhere on the website. No company name or address has been provided anywhere, even on pages where it is a legal requirement, such as the T&C and Privacy Policy. The Contact Us page only provides the email ID ‘feng@mapleze.com‘ which is of a different website. Therefore, there is no real way to contact Bbviplink after making a purchase.

Conclusion

It seems quite obvious that Bbviplink and the 76 similar sites may all be scams from China. The website is being operated anonymously since July 2022 and the prices are too good to be true. Bbviplink seems to be trying to impersonate the New World chain of supermarkets in New Zealand.

The entire website’s content has been copied and the same images and text can be found on at least 76 other websites, all of which are likely to be scams. The website contains no company information. The only contact detail provided is the email ID of a different website.

All the products on the website cost less than $100 and customers can only buy one item at a time. A $99,999 shipping charge is included if more than one item is added to the cart. This seems to be a trick to keep the value of transactions below $100, possibly to exploit a loophole in PayPal’s fraud detection.

Bbviplink has no social media presence and no customer reviews could be found online. It is advisable to avoid shopping on Bbviplink or any of the 76 related websites as there are high chances that you will not receive what you ordered or might receive cheap copies at best.

If you think that you have been scammed by any of these sites, you can contact your bank for a full refund. Don’t accept a partial refund citing that the product is not what you ordered and refuse to ship the items back to China as the merchant is impersonating a business based in New Zealand.
