Is Rocheng Fake or Real?
Fake
Why is Rocheng Fake?
Rocheng is an online store which claims to sell various gaming consoles such as the Nintendo Switch, XBox One X and Playstation 4. Right off the bat, I noticed that the website has the exact same layout as Deathones and I knew this was going to be a fun ride.
Not only is Rocheng selling all the current-gen consoles on the website, it’s also selling them for a third of the original price.
A domain name lookup of the website shows that the website was registered on 27th June 2016 in Shan Dong, China. A trip through the Wayback Machine revealed that the domain Rocheng.com has hosted many different websites over the course of the last four years. In 2016, it was some kind of SME financing website. In 2018, it became a website creation and online promotion business. In 2019, it turned into an online gambling website. In its latest iteration in 2020, it is now a scam website supposedly selling gaming consoles. Looks like a bit of a downfall.
Just like Deathones, Rocheng has a message on the top of the website saying that each user can only purchase one item. There is also a countdown on the product pages with a timer to indicate the time left for the sale to end.
So I proceeded to add 20 PS4s and 10 Switches to my cart. Fortunately, Rocheng had no objection and allowed me to move ahead with the order. Upon proceeding to checkout, my total bill of $2,950 was reduced to $99 thanks to a $50 discount plus a random discount which gave me 97% off. The original price of this cart would have been $13,080.
Just like Deathones, when I clicked on ‘Confirm Order’ to make the PayPal payment, it was redirected through a random website. In this case, it was coonsi.ml which is just a dummy website with no real content.
It’s hilariously obvious that Rocheng is a scam. There are no contact details provided and the only way to contact them is through a form. The cart is rigged to always end up at a total of $99 and it redirects to an unrelated PayPal account for the payment. The ‘one product only’ and flash sale aspects are there just to create false scarcity and urgency so that people quickly complete the order. There is no way that Rocheng is a legitimate business and any payment made to them is sure to vanish into thin air.
